With this chapter we are ending a series of messages called: “Family Mess!” By now we know that “Family Mess” happens, and we also know that God is greater than “Family Mess!” We are using this conversational terminology for the dysfunctionality or sin in families, which is passed on to succeeding generations. In this series, we have also been discussing destiny. In spite of the “Family Mess” of Abraham’s family, God had a destiny for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, through 42 generations to Jesus Christ, all the way to those of us who are Abraham’s children through faith in Jesus Christ. God has a dream, a destiny, and a plan for our lives, and if we trust in God, even “Family Mess” can’t stop it, because God works beneath, behind, through, above, and beyond “Family Mess;” because God is greater than “Family Mess!” I want to read two Scriptures that sum up God’s work, in spite of “Family Mess,” in the life of Joseph. Genesis 41:50-52, “Now before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him. And Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, ‘For,’ he said, ‘God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.’ And he named the second Ephraim, ‘For,’ he said, ‘God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.’”
This doesn’t mean that Joseph won’t have to deal with them anymore, because Jehovah God sent all of his brothers to him, down in Egypt. It means that God can make you forget about them, as far as being the predominant, preoccupying, negative force in your life.
The second Scripture, is a familiar and favorite one for Bible readers. The statement is Joseph’s response to his brothers, after the death of his father. They wanted to know if Joseph was going to seek vengeance against them, now that their father was dead. It is found in Genesis 50:19-20, “But Joseph said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? And as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.” “For all things work together for good, to those who are called according to His purpose.” And finally, God will bring about His dream and destiny for your life, through the “Family Mess” that He allows in your life. He will use “Family Mess” as a vehicle to put you in a place to preserve many people!
