  Sermon Outlines

Isaac’s wife, Rebekah was barren.  So, Isaac prayed for Rebekah and she became pregnant.  But, instead of one baby there were two, and the babies struggled within her.  This was so disturbing to Isaac’s wife, Rebekah, that she asked herself the question, “If I am pregnant, what is going on inside of me?”  So, she went to inquire of the Lord and the Bible says in

Genesis 25:23, “And the Lord said to her, ‘Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples shall be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.”

This third generation of Abraham’s family begins with “Family Mess” in the womb.  This is a remarkable Scripture!  “How can two twins struggle, even before birth?”  The only explanation that I can give you is the genetics of their mother and father!  And yet, this was only an indication of what was to come.

When it came time for Rebekah to deliver the babies, Esau came out first.  They named him Esau, because he was covered with red hair.  Esau’s brother came out after him, and he was holding on to Esau’s heal.  Therefore, they named him Jacob, “one who grasps the heel” or “one who supplants or cheats.”  “Family Mess” marked the gestation of Jacob and Esau and “Family mess” attended their birth, but the worse was yet to come!

Esau swore to him, and sold him his birthright...

Our inability to come face-to-face with what we feel, may lead into actions which are sinful, heartless, and cruel...

As we become more and more aware of the family sin and “Family Mess” of line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, it is remarkable to hear God say, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”  He does so by His grace!
